EMDR for Teens
EMDR Therapy can be helpful for adolescents in overcoming a range of mental health challenges, including trauma, depression, anxiety, and phobias. In my experience, EMDR can be especially effective for teenagers because their brains are still developing and are more flexible, which means they can often adapt more easily to the therapy process.
EMDR can help teens recover from trauma, depression, anxiety, phobias and other mental health concerns.
How can EMDR Help?
EMDR can help people who have experienced things like abuse, divorce, accidents, bullying, the death of a loved one, or violence in the home or community. When we go through these kinds of events, our brains often store them with the same feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations as when they first happened. This means that when something happens later on that reminds us of the traumatic event, we might feel the same way we did when it first occurred. This is often called being "triggered."
EMDR therapy can help by "reprocessing" these experiences, so that they don't trigger negative feelings or symptoms anymore. This can make us feel better and more at peace with ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. While EMDR therapy does require some work and commitment, it can lead to big improvements in how we feel and how we cope with daily life. If you're struggling with the aftermath of a traumatic event, EMDR therapy might be worth considering as a way to find relief and move forward.
Trauma Symptoms in Teens
Teens have many of the same trauma symptoms as adults, and the following may be unique or especially true:
Overreacting to minor upsets.
Strong emotions like sadness, anger, anxiety, and guilt.
Withdrawing from family and friends.
Wanting to spend more time alone.
Disturbed sleeping patterns.
Attention and concentration difficulties.
Frequently spacing out.
